Chicago, IL – Illinois’ minimum wage will increase to $15 per hour on January 1, completing a plan launched in 2019. Workers under 18 will see their wages rise to $13 per hour, a significant boost for young employees.

Tipped workers will earn a minimum of 60% of the state rate, ensuring they receive at least $9 per hour before tips. According to state officials, this increase marks the final step in a five-year initiative aimed at supporting low-income workers.

Chicago’s minimum wage remains higher than the state rate at $16.20 per hour. The city set its own policies to address its higher cost of living. No additional statewide wage hikes are currently planned after this adjustment.

State labor advocates view this increase as a critical measure to reduce poverty and promote economic stability. Employers across Illinois are preparing to implement the new rates as the January 1 deadline nears.

For workers, the raise represents a key step toward achieving financial security in an increasingly expensive economy.
