Houston, Texas – Drivers, outdoor workers and anyone spending time outside across Southeast Texas will face another round of intense summer heat today, with afternoon heat index values climbing as high as 108 degrees. Inland communities are expected to reach the upper 90s to near 100, while the immediate coast remains slightly cooler in the upper 80s to lower 90s.
According to the National Weather Service in Houston/Galveston, Thursday’s highs will range from 94 to 100 degrees inland and 89 to 93 degrees along the beaches. Heat index values between 104 and 108 degrees are expected during the afternoon, with only isolated showers or thunderstorms providing brief relief. South-southwest winds will increase to around 7 to 12 mph.
Houston is forecast to reach 100 degrees, while College Station, Conroe, Columbus and Livingston climb into the upper 90s. Galveston is expected to top out near 91 degrees, and Bay City around 92. The greatest risk for heat-related illness will occur during the midafternoon and early evening, especially for those without adequate shade or air conditioning.
The heat is expected to intensify Friday and Saturday. Forecast heat index values climb into the 107 to 112-degree range for many inland communities before easing slightly by Sunday and Monday as moisture returns to the region. Rain chances also begin increasing Saturday, with scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms becoming more common across Southeast Texas.
Residents should limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing and check on older adults, children and pets. Anyone working outside should take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations.
