Phoenix, Arizona – Anyone heading outdoors across Arizona today will face some of the hottest conditions of the summer as an Extreme Heat Warning expands to cover the entire National Weather Service Phoenix forecast area. Temperatures above 110 degrees will dominate the lower deserts through Sunday evening, creating a high risk of heat-related illness within minutes for those without adequate cooling or hydration.
According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, the expanded Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through 8 p.m. MST Sunday. High temperatures across the warning area will range from 105 to 120 degrees, while overnight lows will only fall into the 80s and lower 90s, providing little relief from the prolonged heat. Even higher terrain communities are expected to reach the middle 100s.
The warning includes much of south-central and western Arizona, including the Phoenix metropolitan area, Yuma, Parker, Blythe, Gila Bend, Casa Grande, Globe, New River, Payson, Prescott and surrounding communities. The extended duration of the heat increases the risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke, particularly for older adults, young children, outdoor workers and anyone without reliable access to air conditioning.
Maricopa County officials continue to offer free transportation to cooling centers for residents without air conditioning through Arizona 211, with service available daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Officials urge residents to drink water frequently, avoid strenuous activity between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
The National Weather Service notes that heat remains the deadliest weather hazard in the United States. Additional heat alerts could be issued if the dangerous temperatures persist into early next week.
