Cass County, IN – The Cass County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) is urging residents to prioritize safety when purchasing battery-powered holiday gifts. Officials warn that imitation battery packs, often sold at steep discounts, may pose significant fire risks when used or stored improperly.
According to the UL Fire Safety Research Institute, many imitation batteries lack proper management systems, increasing the likelihood of overheating or combustion. Some low-cost batteries are created by repurposing damaged or retired units, further heightening the risk of failure.
The EMA advises consumers to avoid batteries showing signs of damage or excessive wear and to prevent overcharging or exposure to high heat. Mishandled batteries have caused multiple emergencies in the past year, underscoring the importance of proper safety practices.
“Battery safety isn’t just about convenience—it’s about preventing real hazards,” the agency stated. Residents should check for certified products and follow manufacturer guidelines to minimize risks.
For more safety tips, the EMA recommends visiting the UL Fire Safety website.
Be cautious this holiday season and help keep Cass County safe.
