New Mexico, Jan. 9, 2025 – Snow and strong winds are expected to impact New Mexico today, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory. The advisory is in effect until 11 p.m. MST, with areas receiving up to 10 inches of snow and gusts reaching 50 mph.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snow totals will vary by region. The Johnson and Bartlett Mesas, along with the South Central Mountains, could see accumulations between 2 and 6 inches. Higher elevations might receive up to 10 inches. Other areas, including Curry and Roosevelt counties, are forecasted for 1 to 4 inches.

Hazardous driving conditions are anticipated, especially along I-25 and portions of I-40. Blowing snow may reduce visibility and cause icy roads. The NWS urges drivers to reduce speed and maintain extra distance between vehicles. The advisory also highlights risks of downed branches due to gusty winds.

The Lower Rio Grande Valley, Central Highlands, and Guadalupe County will experience similar conditions, with snowfall up to 6 inches in some mountain areas. Winds could gust up to 40 mph across the state. These weather conditions are expected to disrupt morning and evening commutes.

Residents are advised to exercise caution when stepping outside as sidewalks and driveways may be icy. Those traveling should check http://nmroads.com for updated road conditions or dial 511 for assistance.

Prepare for challenging conditions and plan accordingly to ensure safety during this winter storm.
