Raleigh, NC – Central and eastern North Carolina are under a Winter Storm Watch as wintry precipitation approaches Friday afternoon. Forecasters predict snow, sleet, and ice could create hazardous travel conditions across the state.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Raleigh, snow and sleet could accumulate up to 3 inches, especially north of Interstate 85. Ice accumulations of up to two-tenths of an inch are possible in the southern Piedmont and Sandhills regions. The watch extends from 1 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday.

In eastern North Carolina, the NWS in Newport predicts up to an inch of snow and sleet, with one-tenth of an inch of ice accumulation. Counties like Pitt, Greene, and Lenoir may see the highest ice totals.

Snowfall is expected to begin Friday afternoon in the western Piedmont and spread eastward overnight. Freezing rain and sleet will likely follow, with a possible transition to rain early Saturday. The storm’s intensity could impact evening commutes Friday and create slick conditions on roads, bridges, and overpasses.

Officials urge residents to monitor forecasts, prepare for power outages, and avoid nonessential travel during the storm. Emergency services warn that ice accumulation may damage power lines and tree limbs, causing outages in some areas.

Motorists should stay alert for updates and prioritize safety if traveling.
