Wenatchee, WA – Rapid snowmelt is set to push rivers higher across Chelan and Okanogan counties late tonight, with water levels approaching thresholds that can flood roads and damage property, especially near the Stehekin River.

According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, a Flood Watch takes effect late tonight and continues until further notice as warming temperatures accelerate mountain snowmelt. The Stehekin River is expected to exceed minor flood stage of 20.5 feet overnight and remain elevated through at least next weekend, increasing the risk of overflow into nearby low-lying areas.

At 19.3 feet, water begins breaching the riverbank. Once levels reach 20 feet, flooding can overtake parts of Company Creek Road and overtop a temporary corduroy bridge, while culverts near Battalion Creek may also be overwhelmed. At 20.5 feet, damage to Wood Road becomes possible.

Communities in Stehekin, along with surrounding rural areas, should prepare for water covering roads, reduced access routes, and potential property impacts. Travelers should avoid flooded roadways, especially overnight into Monday morning when water levels are expected to rise most quickly. Residents are urged to charge devices, secure belongings, and monitor river gauges closely.

This flooding threat will persist through the week as snowmelt continues. Additional warnings may be issued with little lead time if water rises faster than expected.
