Kanosh, Utah – A light but noticeable earthquake struck Millard County early Sunday morning, shaking areas just southwest of Kanosh and prompting brief concern among residents waking up to the tremor.

According to the University of Utah Seismograph Stations, the magnitude 3.3 earthquake hit at 7:47 a.m. Sunday about 6 kilometers south-southwest of Kanosh at a depth of roughly 3.1 kilometers. The shallow depth increased the likelihood that residents near the epicenter felt the shaking, even though the magnitude remained relatively low.

Communities across Millard County, including Kanosh and nearby Fillmore, reported mild ground movement lasting only a few seconds. No immediate damage or injuries have been confirmed, and major roadways such as I-15 through the region remain fully operational. Local emergency management officials have not issued any advisories but continue to monitor seismic activity.

Small earthquakes like this are common in Utah due to the state’s network of active faults, including the nearby Sevier Fault system. While a 3.3 magnitude event typically does not cause structural damage, it can serve as a reminder for residents to review earthquake preparedness plans. Securing heavy furniture, checking emergency kits, and identifying safe shelter areas inside homes remain key safety steps.

Seismologists encourage residents who felt the shaking to submit reports, which help refine intensity maps and improve response data. Additional minor aftershocks are possible within the next several hours, though none are expected to be significant.

Monitoring will continue through Sunday, and updates will be issued if seismic activity increases across Millard County or surrounding southern Utah area.
