Charlotte, NC – Thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts and large hail are expected to roll across the Carolinas Friday afternoon, with Charlotte, Greenville, and surrounding areas most at risk after 2 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a cold front will push into northeast Georgia, western North Carolina, and upstate South Carolina Friday, triggering a line of storms from late morning through the afternoon. Some of these storms could become severe, with winds up to 24 mph and brief tornadoes east of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Charlotte may see isolated showers before noon, followed by scattered thunderstorms between 2 and 7 p.m. Showers could bring up to a quarter inch of rain, with locally heavier amounts in stronger cells. Patchy fog is also possible early in the day. In the foothills and areas like Hickory, Gaffney, and Spartanburg, conditions may improve by evening, though isolated storms may linger.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours, and monitor alerts. Power outages and brief road flooding cannot be ruled out in heavier cells.

Storms are expected to clear overnight Friday, but additional updates are likely as the cold front progresses eastward.
