Grant Parish, LA – A 74-year-old Colfax man was killed Friday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 158.
Louisiana State Police identified the victim as Ernest Chelette, who was driving a 2001 Toyota pickup. Chelette was heading west on Highway 158 when his vehicle left the roadway for unknown reasons. The truck went down an embankment, hit several trees, overturned, and ejected Chelette from the vehicle.
According to Louisiana State Police Troop E, Chelette was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities collected toxicology samples, which are currently being analyzed.
Police continue to investigate the crash and the factors that caused Chelette to leave the road. They have urged drivers to always wear seat belts, stating it can significantly reduce injury or death in accidents.
