Cumming, GA – A large law enforcement response ended Tuesday afternoon with the arrest of a suspect after a shooting in Forsyth County prompted a shelter-in-place order and a multi-agency manhunt.
According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at approximately 8:34 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, following multiple 911 reports of shots fired near Kelly Mill Road and the Barrett Downs neighborhood.
Investigators said a resident reported that bullets had penetrated a child’s bedroom in a nearby home. Deputies determined the shooting stemmed from a dispute between individuals who knew one another near 1628 Kelly Mill Road. Authorities said shots were fired at a vehicle during the incident.
Deputies located a vehicle with numerous bullet holes near Bethelview Road and Kelly Mill Road, where they also found a woman involved in the incident.
According to the sheriff’s office, the victim, identified as Jason Treadwell, had left the scene and was later located near Buford Dam Road and Nuckolls Road. Treadwell was arrested on outstanding warrants from Henry County.
Investigators believed the alleged shooter, Jason Simmons, remained in the area. Forsyth County SWAT, assisted by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Drone Team, searched a residence and recovered a firearm believed to have been used in the shooting. Simmons was not located inside the home, prompting a large-scale search involving multiple agencies and K-9 units.
At approximately 2 p.m., a resident reported seeing movement in a backyard. K-9 teams tracked Simmons, who was taken into custody without further incident.
According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, Simmons is currently charged with aggravated assault, a felony, and additional charges are expected. The allegations have not been proven in court.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing.
