Kittery, ME – A two-vehicle crash on the Piscataqua River Bridge early Thursday left one man dead and caused significant traffic delays.
According to Maine State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 1:14 a.m. on the Maine Turnpike’s southbound lanes. Traffic had stopped on the Maine/New Hampshire border due to an earlier crash in New Hampshire. While stopped, a box truck was struck from behind by a Toyota Camry driven by 41-year-old Jacob Wolterbeek of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Wolterbeek was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities closed the southbound lanes for several hours following the collision, which occurred on the high rise of the bridge. The lanes have since reopened, but the crash remains under investigation.
