JACKSON — A fast-moving clipper system is bringing accumulating snow and hazardous travel conditions across much of eastern Kentucky today through early Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Jackson.

Snow began early this morning and will continue at times through tonight, with snow showers lingering into Saturday morning. Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for several counties, including portions of Perry, Pike, Floyd, Knott, Letcher, and Harlan Counties, where travel impacts are expected to increase throughout the day.

Most lower elevations can expect around 1 inch of snow, with localized amounts up to 2 inches, especially across northern and eastern portions of the region. In higher terrain above 2,000 feet, particularly near the Virginia border, upslope snow showers may lead to total accumulations of 2 to 4 inches by early Saturday.

Road conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly, especially on untreated surfaces. Travel along KY-15, US-23, KY-80, KY-476, and I-64 may become slick and snow-covered at times, with brief periods of reduced visibility possible during heavier snow showers or isolated snow squalls.

Snowfall rates may briefly become moderate this afternoon and evening, leading to snow-covered roads and low visibility, particularly during peak travel hours. Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach their destinations.

Temperatures will remain cold enough for snow to accumulate on roads and bridges, especially overnight. While snowfall will gradually taper off by Saturday morning, lingering slick spots are expected into the early hours.

Residents should stay alert for updated advisories and forecasts, and monitor local road conditions as winter weather continues to impact eastern Kentucky.
