Downers Grove, IL – A second juvenile has been charged in connection with an armed robbery that occurred last month in the downtown district of Downers Grove, authorities announced Thursday.

According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, the 17-year-old male, a Venezuelan national currently residing in Aurora, was taken into custody and appeared for a detention hearing Thursday morning. Judge Kishori Tank ordered that he remain detained until at least his next court appearance, scheduled for Tuesday, May 27. The juvenile is facing one count of Armed Robbery with a Firearm, a Class X felony.

Authorities say the robbery occurred around 8:37 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, in the 4900 block of Forest Avenue. According to Downers Grove police, the female victim was walking alone when she was confronted by four individuals. One of the suspects allegedly tried to pull her purse while another displayed a firearm in his waistband and demanded money. The suspects reportedly fled after taking approximately $110 from the victim.

The investigation led to the identification of two juvenile suspects, one of whom was located in Colorado. A warrant was issued on May 7, and the suspect voluntarily waived extradition. He was returned to DuPage County on May 16.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin praised law enforcement’s persistence in the case. “Lawlessness is not who we are in DuPage County,” Berlin said. “Those who choose to engage in this behavior will be held accountable.”

Downers Grove Police Chief Michael DeVries commended his department’s Investigations Unit, adding that cooperation among agencies was crucial in apprehending both suspects.

As of now, both juveniles remain in custody. The charges are allegations, and the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
