Wheaton, IL – A DuPage County jury has found a former Chicago man guilty of multiple felonies related to the 2022 shooting of a pregnant woman traveling along Route 83.

Lawrence Grant, 41, was convicted Friday of Attempted Murder and multiple firearm-related charges following a four-day trial and less than three hours of jury deliberation.

According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, the shooting occurred on January 28, 2022, around 7 p.m. when Willowbrook police responded to a vehicle crash on Route 83. Officers discovered the victim—eight months pregnant—suffering from a gunshot wound to the back. She was rushed to a local hospital where doctors successfully delivered the baby during emergency surgery. Both mother and child survived and later recovered.

Investigators allege that the shooting followed a confrontation involving Grant, the victim, and a third individual at a Whole Foods on Kingery Highway. The argument reportedly escalated into a physical altercation. After the individuals left in separate vehicles, Grant allegedly followed the victim and opened fire, striking her vehicle several times and hitting her in the back, which led to the crash.

Authorities located Grant later that night at the University of Chicago Hospital, where he had been admitted on an unrelated matter. The vehicle he had allegedly used was found burned just a block from the hospital. He was taken into custody upon discharge and has remained in the DuPage County Jail since bond was set at $2 million in February 2022.

Grant’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 20 for return of the Pre-Sentence Report. He faces 31 years to life in prison.
