Dodge City, Kansas – Dry air and gusty northwest winds are creating elevated fire weather conditions across southwest Kansas this Saturday afternoon, especially along major corridors including US-50, US-83 and US-54.
Relative humidity values are expected to drop into the low to mid-teens during peak heating hours, creating an environment favorable for rapid fire growth. At the same time, northwest wind gusts could reach around 20 mph, further increasing the risk of grassland fires spreading quickly.
Communities including Dodge City, Garden City, Liberal, Hays and Pratt will experience dry and unseasonably warm conditions. Fine fuels such as dry grasses can ignite easily under these circumstances, particularly during the afternoon when temperatures and wind speeds are at their highest.
Officials strongly discourage outdoor burning today. Activities that create sparks, including welding, using chainsaws, or driving vehicles over dry grass, should be avoided. Even small flames can quickly become difficult to control when humidity is low and winds are gusty.
Drivers traveling along I-70 and US-50 should remain alert for any sudden smoke plumes that could reduce visibility. If a fire develops near a roadway, be prepared for changing traffic conditions.
While no widespread red flag warning is currently in effect everywhere, the combination of low humidity and gusty winds is enough to warrant heightened caution. Conditions are expected to gradually improve after sunset as temperatures cool and humidity levels recover.
Residents across southwest Kansas are urged to remain vigilant and report any signs of wildfire immediately to local authorities.
