Dearborn, MI – A 15-year-old student remains in critical condition after a Dec. 20 traffic accident on Ford Road. The driver, Mahdi Bitar, 19, of Dearborn, now faces a felony charge in the incident.
Police said Bitar was arraigned Friday in the 19th District Court. He faces one count of Reckless Driving Causing Serious Impairment. A judge set his bond at $50,000 with a 10% requirement. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for Jan. 22.
Investigators revealed that the crash occurred at the intersection of Ford Road and Schaefer Road. The teen, a Fordson High School student, was attempting to cross legally when Bitar’s Jeep Grand Cherokee struck her.
Camera footage showed that Bitar failed to stop at the red light before hitting the pedestrian. Investigators also determined that speed played a role in the collision. Additionally, the Jeep’s illegal window tint on the front windshield obstructed the driver’s vision.
The teenager remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Police emphasized that reckless driving poses significant risks on local roads. Authorities continue to investigate and urged witnesses to come forward with any additional information.
