Detroit, MI – Southeast Michigan is under dangerous heat and air quality warnings as temperatures and ozone levels rise to hazardous levels throughout the week.

According to the US National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac, a warm and humid air mass will persist, with peak heat indices reaching 95F to 100F each afternoon. Overnight temperatures will remain above 70F, providing little relief. The extreme heat, combined with elevated ozone levels, poses significant health risks, especially for those without access to effective cooling or adequate hydration.

The air quality alert, in effect for Sunday, warns of elevated ozone levels that can exacerbate respiratory conditions, particularly affecting children, older adults, and those with pre-existing health issues. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities, especially during the hottest parts of the day, and to stay hydrated.

Preparedness actions recommended by the weather service include reducing outdoor exertion, drinking plenty of water, and wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing. Information centers and local emergency management agencies are available to assist those in need of cooling resources.

Authorities emphasize the importance of staying informed through local media and the US National Weather Service for updates on weather conditions and health advisories.
