Paducah, KY — Residents of eastern Missouri, western Kentucky, and southern Illinois should prepare for severe weather conditions today and through the week. The National Weather Service in Paducah has issued alerts for both severe thunderstorms and excessive heat.

According to the National Weather Service, there is a slight to marginal risk of severe thunderstorms, particularly in the northeastern parts of the area. The storms are expected to be isolated to scattered, mainly occurring during the afternoon and early evening. These thunderstorms could bring damaging winds and heavy rainfall. Areas most at risk include much of southwest Indiana, southeast Illinois, and northwest Kentucky.

In addition to the storm risk, dangerous heat index values ranging from 105 to 115 degrees are forecast through Thursday. The excessive heat warning highlights that high temperatures in the mid to upper 90s, combined with very high humidity, will produce peak heat index values that can cause heat-related stress and illness. Overnight lows are expected to remain in the middle to upper 70s, offering little relief from the heat.

Residents are advised to take precautions such as staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities, and checking on vulnerable individuals, including the elderly. The NWS also recommends never leaving children or pets in parked vehicles, as temperatures can quickly become life-threatening.

With clear skies expected for the weekend, temperatures are forecast to remain high, reaching 90 degrees on Saturday and Sunday. Relief from the heat might come next week, with temperatures slightly decreasing to the low 90s.
