Chicago, IL – A routine intake screening at the Cook County Jail led to the discovery of a loaded handgun on an incoming detainee, prompting additional felony weapons charges, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at approximately 9:36 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, when correctional staff detected a firearm during the booking process.
Authorities said the weapon was identified as a 9mm Taurus handgun loaded with 13 rounds, including one in the chamber. The firearm was safely recovered before the detainee entered the secure portion of the facility.
The Sheriff’s Office identified the detainee as 23-year-old Philip Robinson, who was already in custody on misdemeanor charges. Officials said Robinson now also faces additional felony weapons charges in connection with the alleged attempt to bring the firearm into the jail.
The Sheriff’s Office stated that every individual entering the Cook County Jail undergoes screening and a thorough search. Officials said attempts to bring weapons or other contraband into the facility are routinely detected and prosecuted.
Sheriff’s officials credited correctional staff with preventing the firearm from entering the secure facility, calling the recovery an example of the effectiveness of intake screening procedures.
The charges against Robinson are allegations. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
