Ohio – Clouds are thickening and the air feels heavier across Columbus this afternoon, a clear signal storms are building and could hit during peak travel hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, scattered thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and evening, with a few storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts and large hail. While coverage remains scattered, any storm that forms could intensify quickly.

Temperatures climb to around 83°F today, helping fuel instability across Franklin County and surrounding areas. Winds gusting over 20 mph will add energy to developing storms. Drivers along I-70, I-71, and I-270 should prepare for sudden downpours and rapid visibility drops.

Storm chances continue into midweek. Wednesday brings a 40% to 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms, with highs near 86°F. By Thursday, rain becomes more widespread, with a 60% chance of showers likely after midday. Roads may stay wet for extended periods, increasing the risk of slick conditions.

Plan ahead if you’re traveling this afternoon or evening. Keep headlights on during rain and allow extra stopping distance. Conditions may deteriorate quickly once storms begin.

Looking ahead, drier air briefly returns Friday with partial sunshine and highs near the upper 70s, but additional showers could redevelop over the weekend.

Tonight: Chance of storms, low around 67°F
