Grand Junction, Colorado – Another wave of showers and thunderstorms is sweeping across southwest Colorado and southeast Utah today, bringing the risk of flash flooding, small hail, and gusty winds. Drivers along U.S. 491 and U.S. 550 should expect reduced visibility and ponding on roadways as rainfall intensifies through the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, saturated soils and steep terrain across the Four Corners region make localized flooding especially likely. While widespread showers are expected, the severity of storms will depend on how long morning cloud cover lingers — a key factor in whether stronger storms form later today.
Communities including Cortez, Monticello, Blanding, and Durango may see storm totals high enough to trigger flash flood warnings, especially in burn scar and canyon areas. Lightning will be frequent, and some storms could produce pea-sized hail and wind gusts over 40 mph.
Residents are urged to monitor weather alerts closely and avoid low-lying or flood-prone areas. Those recreating outdoors or driving in rural areas should have alternate routes and emergency supplies ready.
Storm activity could persist into the evening, with temperatures staying 3–5 degrees cooler than average. Additional advisories are possible if storm coverage increases.
