Cleveland, Ohio – A prolonged hard freeze will take hold overnight, with temperatures plunging into the mid-20s by early Monday and creating risks for plumbing, crops, and the morning commute across northern Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, a Freeze Warning is in effect from 11 p.m. Sunday through 11 a.m. Monday. Areas including Cleveland, Akron, Toledo, Youngstown, and Mansfield will experience sub-freezing temperatures, with lows dropping to around 24 degrees inland and 26 degrees near the Lake Erie shoreline.
The extended duration of freezing conditions increases the risk of frost buildup on elevated roadways. Major routes such as I-90, I-71, I-75, and I-80 may see slick spots develop on bridges and overpasses before sunrise, especially between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. Monday. Visibility could also be reduced in localized frost patches.
Agriculture and residential infrastructure face significant impacts. Early-season crops, gardens, and flowering trees are at risk of damage or loss. Residents should cover sensitive plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and insulate or shut off outdoor water lines to prevent pipe damage.
Freezing temperatures will persist into the late morning hours before rising above 32 degrees after 11 a.m. Monday. Additional cold alerts may be issued if similar overnight conditions continue into the week.
