Wilmington, Ohio – Drivers across southwest and central Ohio should prepare for multiple rounds of heavy rain beginning this afternoon, with up to 2 inches of rainfall that could flood low-lying stretches of Interstate 71 and U.S. 68 through Thursday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, several waves of showers and thunderstorms will develop from Wednesday afternoon through early Friday. An additional 1 to 2 inches of rain is expected across much of the region, with isolated totals reaching 3 inches where storms repeatedly track over the same areas. A few storms could become strong, producing gusty winds and intense rainfall rates.
The heaviest rain is likely from Cincinnati through Wilmington to Columbus, impacting major corridors including I-75, I-71 and I-70. Evening commuters Wednesday may encounter ponding water, reduced visibility and brief street flooding in urban areas. In Dayton and Springfield, quick bursts of rain could overwhelm storm drains during peak travel hours.
Emergency managers warn that rapid runoff may lead to localized flooding, especially in poor drainage areas and near creeks and streams. Motorists should never drive through water-covered roads and allow extra braking distance on wet pavement.
Additional showers are expected Thursday, prolonging the flood risk into early Friday morning. Residents are urged to monitor alerts closely, as Flood Advisories or Severe Thunderstorm Warnings may be issued with little notice if rainfall intensifies.
