Hastings, NE – Thunderstorm chances are expected to steadily increase across central Nebraska through the weekend and into early next week, with forecasters warning that some storms could become strong to severe at times.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, isolated thunderstorms may develop Thursday and Friday, May 14-15, before storm coverage becomes more widespread Saturday and Sunday, May 16-17.

Forecasters said temperatures will remain unusually warm for mid-May, with highs ranging from the middle 80s to lower 90s across much of the region. Breezy conditions are also expected periodically through the weekend, especially during the afternoon hours.

Storm chances Thursday and Friday are currently expected to remain relatively isolated, with rain coverage around 20% to 30%. However, forecast confidence increases for scattered thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday as moisture and instability build across the Central Plains.

The National Weather Service said portions of Nebraska remain under marginal to slight risks for severe weather during the coming days. The greatest threat for severe storms is expected during the late afternoon and evening hours.

Large hail and damaging wind gusts are considered the primary threats, although forecasters noted an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out with stronger storms this weekend.

Meteorologists also emphasized that not every location will receive significant rainfall despite the repeated storm chances, as coverage and storm placement remain uncertain.

Communities including Hastings, Grand Island, Kearney, Holdrege, and Lexington are all expected to experience the warmer and more active weather pattern through early next week.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts frequently as severe weather details become clearer over the next several days.
