Des Moines, Iowa – Drivers across Iowa could face dangerous travel conditions late Thursday as powerful thunderstorms threaten large hail, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes through Friday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines and the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, an active spring weather pattern will take shape beginning Wednesday, with the most significant severe threat arriving Thursday night and continuing into Friday. Forecasters warn that very large hail exceeding 2 inches in diameter is possible, along with wind gusts over 60 mph and a few tornadoes.

The threat covers much of the state, including Polk, Dallas, Linn and Scott counties. In the Des Moines metro, storms could intensify after 5 p.m. Thursday, potentially impacting the evening commute along Interstates 35 and 80. Eastern Iowa cities such as Cedar Rapids and Davenport may see stronger activity linger into Friday afternoon.

Residents should review severe weather safety plans now, charge mobile devices and identify a sturdy shelter location away from windows. Secure outdoor furniture and vehicles where possible to limit hail damage.

The unsettled pattern may persist into early next week, and additional watches or warnings could be issued as confidence increases.
