Indiana residents should prepare for a turbulent weekend as severe storms, damaging winds, and an elevated fire risk impact the state. Strong thunderstorms, heavy rain, and wind gusts up to 50 mph are expected across central Indiana from Friday night into Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 5 p.m. Friday until 4 p.m. Saturday, covering much of central, east central, and southern Indiana, including Indianapolis, Bloomington, and Lafayette. Winds between 20-30 mph, with gusts reaching 50 mph, could cause tree damage and power outages. High-profile vehicles should use caution on highways, including I-69 and I-65.
Severe thunderstorms are expected late Friday night into Saturday morning. These storms could produce damaging straight-line winds, large hail, and even a few tornadoes. Torrential rain may lead to localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas. Residents should stay weather-aware and have a severe weather plan in place.
Adding to the risks, an elevated fire danger is forecast for Friday afternoon due to gusty winds and low humidity. The NWS urges residents to avoid burning and to properly dispose of cigarettes to prevent wildfires.
