Omaha, Nebraska – Strong to severe thunderstorms could disrupt the evening commute across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa Thursday, with the most intense impacts expected between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, much of the region sits under a Level 2 out of 5 severe weather risk, including Omaha, Council Bluffs, and areas east into western Iowa. Farther west, including Grand Island and York, a lower Level 1 risk remains in place. Forecasters warn that any storm that develops could quickly become severe.

Cities in the primary impact zone include Omaha, Lincoln, Fremont, Blair, and Council Bluffs. Storms are expected to develop during the late afternoon and move east, affecting major corridors such as I-80, I-29, and U.S. 75 during peak travel hours. Wind gusts could exceed 60 to 70 mph, strong enough to down trees and power lines, while hail may reach severe limits. A few tornadoes are also possible, particularly in eastern Nebraska into western Iowa.

Residents should secure outdoor items, charge devices, and identify a safe shelter location before storms arrive. If a warning is issued, move to a basement or interior room away from windows immediately.

Storms are expected to weaken later Thursday night, but additional alerts may be issued as conditions evolve through the evening.
