Springfield, IL – Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected across Central Illinois beginning late Thursday night, May 14, and continuing through the weekend, with some storms potentially becoming severe.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, several periods of storm activity are expected from late Thursday into Saturday evening, May 16, as a warmer and more humid weather pattern settles across the region.
The first round of storms is expected late Thursday night into Friday morning, primarily affecting portions of west-central and central Illinois. Forecasters said a Level 1 out of 5 marginal risk for severe weather is in place during this period.
Additional thunderstorms are possible Friday evening, May 15, with the severe weather threat continuing across much of Central Illinois, including Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington, Decatur, Jacksonville, and surrounding communities.
The strongest storms through Friday are expected to produce damaging wind gusts and large hail. Tornado and flooding risks currently remain low, according to forecasters.
Another round of storms could develop Saturday evening, May 16, with portions of western and northern Illinois under a Level 2 out of 5 slight risk for severe weather. Areas farther east remain under a Level 1 marginal risk.
Meteorologists noted that uncertainty remains regarding exact storm timing and coverage through the weekend, but residents with outdoor plans are encouraged to closely monitor updated forecasts over the next several days.
Forecasters also warned that while many hours may remain dry, any storm that develops could quickly become strong or severe.
