Peoria, Illinois – A sharp overnight temperature drop will bring freezing conditions across central Illinois early Monday, threatening plants, outdoor plumbing, and potentially creating slick spots for the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Freeze Warning is in effect from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Monday for a large portion of central and east-central Illinois. A Frost Advisory remains in place through 8 a.m. Sunday morning, with temperatures already dipping into the mid-30s and producing widespread frost.

Cities including Peoria, Bloomington, Normal, Champaign, Urbana, Danville, and Galesburg are expected to see lows between 30 and 32 degrees by sunrise Monday. Rural and low-lying areas could briefly dip below 30 degrees. Key travel routes such as I-74, I-55, and I-57 may develop patchy frost on bridges and overpasses, especially before 7 a.m., increasing the risk of slick driving conditions.

The freeze poses a direct threat to early-season crops, gardens, and flowering trees. Residents should cover or bring in sensitive plants, disconnect garden hoses, and protect exposed pipes. Those traveling early Monday should allow extra time and watch for isolated icy patches on elevated surfaces.

Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing shortly after 8 a.m. Monday. Additional alerts may be issued if cold conditions persist into subsequent mornings.
