Pocatello, Idaho – Sub-freezing temperatures are gripping eastern Idaho this morning, with a hard freeze underway in parts of the Snake River Plain that could damage crops, outdoor plumbing, and create slick spots for early drivers.

According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, a Freeze Warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. Sunday across the Upper and Lower Snake River Plain, the Arco/Mud Lake Desert, and the Eastern Magic Valley. Temperatures have dropped as low as 23 degrees in areas like Burley, Rupert, and Shoshone, while cities including Idaho Falls, Pocatello, and Rexburg are seeing lows between 28 and 32 degrees.

The coldest conditions are concentrated in the Eastern Magic Valley, where a hard freeze is likely. Elsewhere, frost is widespread, especially in low-lying and rural areas. Roads such as I-15 and I-86 may see patchy frost on bridges and overpasses during the early morning hours, increasing the risk of slick travel before temperatures climb.

Agricultural impacts are a major concern, with early-season crops and flowering plants at risk of damage or loss. Residents are urged to cover sensitive vegetation, bring potted plants indoors, and protect exposed pipes and irrigation systems.

Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing after 10 a.m. Sunday, reducing immediate impacts. Additional cold alerts may be issued if similar overnight conditions develop again.
