Boston, Mass. – Light snow will sweep west to east across Massachusetts between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday, coating major highways with up to 1 inch and creating slick travel during the late morning and early afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, a cold front crossing southern New England will generate scattered snow showers with accumulations ranging from a dusting to around 1 inch. The steadiest snow targets central and eastern Massachusetts through early afternoon Sunday before tapering from west to east.
Statewide, drivers on I-90 from Springfield to Boston should expect reduced visibility and wet pavement turning slushy at times. I-91 through the Connecticut River Valley may see brief bursts of moderate snow before noon Sunday, while I-290 in Worcester could turn slick during heavier showers. Even minor accumulation can create spinouts when pavement temperatures hover near freezing.
In the Boston metro, I-93, Route 128 and the Southeast Expressway are likely to see periods of light snow through about 2 p.m. Sunday. Road spray and quick coatings on untreated surfaces may slow traffic, especially on ramps and overpasses. South of the city, I-95 into Rhode Island faces similar conditions into midafternoon.
Motorists should reduce speeds, allow extra braking distance and plan for pockets of slippery travel through Sunday afternoon. While snowfall totals remain modest, temperatures will stay cold enough for snow to stick on grassy and elevated surfaces. Crews will monitor for localized slick spots, and additional statements may be issued if heavier snow bands develop before the system exits later Sunday.
