West Chicago, IL – A Bloomingdale man was arrested early Tuesday after allegedly attempting to rob a gas station at gunpoint in West Chicago while carrying multiple firearms and wearing body armor.

According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, Filip Simonovic, 43, appeared in bond court Tuesday morning where Judge Joshua Dieden granted a request to detain him pre-trial. Simonovic faces one count of Attempt Armed Robbery with a Firearm and several related weapons charges following an incident that began just after 1:25 a.m. Tuesday.

Police say a West Chicago officer was inside Thornton’s Gas Station at 1330 S. Neltnor Boulevard when a store clerk indicated that Simonovic, who was also in the store, had allegedly pointed a firearm at him. After approaching Simonovic, officers located two loaded Beretta handguns on his person and discovered he was wearing body armor under his clothing. Upon further investigation, police found three more firearms, additional ammunition, and open alcohol containers in his vehicle. His blood alcohol content was allegedly measured at .147 at the time of arrest.

Authorities allege Simonovic attempted to buy cigarettes, then pulled a handgun, chambered a round, and demanded money from two registers before pointing a second firearm at the clerk. He then reportedly concealed the weapons as an officer neared the store.

Simonovic’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 23, 2025, in front of Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh.
