Billings, MT – A shift to wetter and more humid weather is expected across the Billings area this week as a monsoonal weather pattern increases the potential for heavy rainfall and slow-moving thunderstorms through Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, abundant atmospheric moisture moving into central and south-central Montana will create favorable conditions for locally heavy downpours Tuesday and Wednesday. Portions of the region are included in a Level 1 of 5 (Marginal) risk for excessive rainfall, indicating isolated flooding is possible where the heaviest rain develops.
Forecasters say thunderstorms will be capable of producing periods of intense rainfall because storms are expected to move slowly while tapping into unusually high moisture levels. Although widespread flooding is not forecast, localized ponding on roads, poor-drainage flooding, and rapid rises on small streams could occur in areas that receive repeated rounds of rain.
The outlook includes Billings and surrounding communities across Yellowstone County and portions of central Montana, where showers and thunderstorms may develop during the afternoon and evening hours on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
Residents with outdoor plans should remain alert for changing weather conditions and be prepared to seek shelter if thunderstorms approach. Drivers are also encouraged to use caution during heavy rain, as visibility can quickly deteriorate and water may collect on roadways.
The National Weather Service advises everyone to monitor the latest forecasts and ensure they have multiple ways to receive weather warnings as conditions can change rapidly.
