Danville, IL – A Danville man is facing multiple preliminary felony charges after police say he allegedly fired a gun into the air following an argument and attempted to hide the weapon before officers recovered it with the assistance of a police K-9.
According to the Danville Police Department, officers responded at approximately 9:53 a.m. on Friday, July 31, 2026, to the 100 block of Fairweight Avenue for a report of a gunshot fired into the air after an argument over leaving a dumpster lid open.
When officers arrived, they spoke with witnesses and were able to call David Jones, 42, of Danville, out of his apartment. Police said Jones peacefully surrendered to officers, and investigators then uncovered evidence suggesting a firearm had been discharged.
Authorities obtained a search warrant for the apartment. During the investigation, Danville Police K-9 Judd conducted an article search of the surrounding area and located a firearm hidden in overgrown grass in an alley just east of the residence.
Police allege Jones was arrested on preliminary charges of reckless discharge of a firearm, unlawful possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, and possession of a stolen firearm. He was transported to the Vermilion County Jail.
According to police, Jones was denied pretrial release on Monday, Aug. 3, 2026, and remains in custody.
The case remains under investigation. The charges are allegations, and Jones is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
