Duluth, MN – Residents across northeastern Minnesota, including the Duluth area, are being urged to limit outdoor activity after an air quality alert was issued due to wildfire smoke that is expected to linger through Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), the alert is in effect from 7 a.m. Tuesday, July 14, through 11 a.m. Thursday, July 16. Forecasters say air quality is expected to deteriorate into the Purple Air Quality Index (AQI) category, a level considered very unhealthy for everyone.
The alert covers much of northeastern Minnesota, including communities such as Duluth, Hibbing, Ely, Two Harbors, Grand Marais, Silver Bay, and surrounding areas.
Unlike lower-level air quality advisories that primarily affect sensitive groups, a Purple AQI means everyone may begin to experience health effects from smoke exposure. Officials recommend avoiding prolonged or strenuous outdoor activities, keeping windows closed when possible, and using air filtration indoors if available. Those with heart or lung disease, older adults, children, and pregnant individuals may face an even greater risk.
Smoke concentrations can fluctuate as wind patterns change, so air quality may improve or worsen throughout the alert period.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and air quality conditions through the National Weather Service and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency before spending extended time outdoors.
