Albuquerque, NM – A deadly crash involving five vehicles near the Big I interchange on Interstate 40 claimed one life on Friday. Chamar Gallegos, 26, of Albuquerque, died after her 2000 Honda Civic collided with a GMC SUV, setting off a chain reaction of collisions.
Gallegos was driving east on I-40, preparing to head north on Interstate 25. The traffic ahead slowed, but her vehicle failed to stop, rear-ending the SUV. Three more vehicles were involved in the crash.
Gallegos, who was not properly restrained, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at a local hospital. No other injuries were reported. Investigators say alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
All lanes of eastbound Interstate 40 were closed for three hours as crews worked to clear the scene and investigate the collision. According to New Mexico State Police, the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Drivers in the area were advised to expect significant delays during the investigation.
