Braceville, IL – A significant multi-vehicle accident occurred on Interstate 55 southbound near mile marker 230 at approximately 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. The crash involved several vehicles and resulted in a large debris field, prompting the complete closure of the southbound lanes.
According to initial reports, emergency responders from Braceville, Braidwood, and Gardner Fire Protection Districts arrived promptly at the scene. They reported 10 to 15 individuals requiring medical attention. To manage the situation, additional ambulances from Coal City, South Wilmington, Dwight, and Mazon were dispatched to assist.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area as cleanup and investigation efforts are underway. Authorities have not yet provided an estimated time for reopening the affected lanes. Drivers should seek alternative routes and remain alert for updates from local traffic advisories.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Officials urge anyone with information or who witnessed the incident to contact the Illinois State Police.
