Hastings, Nebraska – Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop after 6 p.m. Friday, with increasing impacts overnight as wet roads and reduced visibility begin affecting travel on major routes including U.S. 281 and Interstate 80.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, rain chances will surge to 70–95% across central Nebraska through the weekend, with multiple rounds of storms expected Saturday and Sunday. While Friday remains the warmest day, with highs reaching 76 degrees, conditions will turn more unsettled heading into Saturday morning.
Cities including Grand Island, Kearney, Hastings, and Holdrege will see widespread rain by early Saturday, with highs ranging from 55 to 72 degrees. Storms may produce wind gusts up to 25–30 mph, leading to brief travel slowdowns and ponding on roadways. By Sunday, continued rounds of rain and embedded thunderstorms will keep roads slick, especially on rural highways and low-lying areas prone to water buildup.
Drivers should plan for longer travel times, keep headlights on in heavy rain, and avoid water-covered roads. Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items and monitor alerts in case stronger storms develop.
Rain and storm chances will gradually ease late Sunday night, but additional updates are likely as conditions evolve through the weekend.
