Springfield, Illinois – Rain is already affecting the Friday morning commute across central Illinois, with wet pavement and reduced visibility slowing traffic on major corridors including I-55, I-57, and I-72 through at least 10 a.m., with lingering showers possible into the early evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Central Illinois, the highest rain chances will occur during the morning hours before tapering off later today. Temperatures will still climb into the low to mid-70s, several degrees above late-April averages, before a brief stretch of quieter weather arrives this weekend.

Cities including Peoria, Champaign, Decatur, Bloomington, and Springfield will see improving conditions by late Friday, followed by dry skies Saturday and Sunday. Highs will hold in the 73 to 77 degree range, with overnight lows dipping into the mid-40s to upper-50s.

Attention then shifts to Monday, when a cold front will push into the region by mid-afternoon. That system could trigger strong to severe thunderstorms after 3 p.m., with the potential for damaging wind gusts over 60 mph, heavy rain, and isolated power outages. Travel disruptions are possible during the evening commute, especially along I-74 and I-72.

Residents should use the weekend to prepare—charge devices, review severe weather plans, and monitor updates as confidence increases in Monday’s storm timing. Cooler air settles in by Tuesday, with highs dropping into the upper 60s.
