Dodge City, Kansas – Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop after 2 p.m. Saturday across central and south-central Kansas, with the most significant impacts arriving between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. as strong winds and large hail threaten travel on key routes including US-283, US-50, and I-135.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, storms will likely form first between Dodge City and Hays during the afternoon before expanding eastward into the evening. Areas along and east of Highway 283 face the highest risk, with hail up to 2 inches in diameter and wind gusts reaching 60 mph. While the tornado risk remains low, an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

Communities including Dodge City, Hays, Great Bend, Pratt, Hutchinson, and Wichita are in the primary impact zone. Drivers could encounter sudden visibility drops, hail-covered roads, and debris from downed tree limbs. Evening events and outdoor activities may be disrupted, especially during peak storm hours.

Residents should move vehicles under cover, secure loose outdoor items, and avoid unnecessary travel during the late afternoon and evening. Keep multiple ways to receive warnings, particularly as storms intensify.

Storms are expected to weaken after 10 p.m., but additional updates may be issued if stronger cells develop or shift farther east.
