Montgomery County, MO – An armed suspect is in custody following a dangerous multi-county pursuit Friday morning along Interstate 70 that included reported gunfire and speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.

According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 8:52 a.m. Friday, May 9, 2026, when dispatchers received reports of a reckless driver creating a significant risk to public safety. A deputy located the vehicle minutes later near the 171.8 mile marker on westbound I-70 and attempted a traffic stop.

Authorities say the driver, later identified as Clayton R. Wulf, 31, of Ellisville, allegedly refused to comply and fled, initiating a high-speed pursuit. During the chase near the 168 mile marker, Wulf allegedly leaned out of the vehicle with a handgun and fired approximately seven rounds toward pursuing deputies and a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper. No injuries were reported.

The pursuit continued through Callaway and Boone counties, where officials say the suspect drove recklessly, including on the shoulder, forcing vehicles off the road, and navigating roundabouts in the wrong direction.

According to law enforcement, the chase ended after the suspect lost control and crashed near East St. Charles Road and Lake of the Woods Road. He then fled on foot but was apprehended roughly 100 yards from the crash site.

Investigators recovered multiple firearms, ammunition, and suspected drug-related items from the vehicle. Wulf faces multiple charges, including assault on law enforcement, unlawful use of a weapon, and aggravated fleeing.

The investigation remains ongoing.
