Duluth, Minnesota – Residents across northern Minnesota should prepare for potentially severe thunderstorms Tuesday, with the highest risk developing during the afternoon and evening hours when damaging wind gusts and large hail could disrupt travel and outdoor activities.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across the region Tuesday, with a few storms becoming strong to severe, especially in north-central Minnesota. Forecasters identified large hail up to 1 inch in diameter and wind gusts reaching 60 mph as the primary threats. Localized heavy rainfall is also possible beneath stronger storms.

The greatest severe weather risk extends across portions of north-central Minnesota, including areas near Brainerd, Walker and Grand Rapids. While storms are expected across much of northeastern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, the strongest cells are most likely to develop west of Duluth before tracking east during the evening.

Timing guidance from the National Weather Service shows storm chances increasing significantly after midday, with many communities seeing the highest probabilities between midafternoon and early evening. Travelers should be alert for sudden reductions in visibility, ponding on roads and rapidly changing weather conditions.

Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items, monitor weather alerts and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Additional watches or warnings could be issued Tuesday as storms organize across the region.
