Cincinnati, Ohio – Fog hangs over parts of Cincinnati while water still covers some roads after hours of heavy rain. The morning begins with lingering flooding concerns, but attention will quickly shift to dangerous heat and another round of potentially severe thunderstorms later today.
Flooding remains a concern across portions of Hamilton County following heavy rainfall that prompted a Flood Warning early this morning. According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, numerous roads remain closed due to standing water, and residual flooding continues in low-lying areas. Communities including Cincinnati, Norwood, Fort Thomas, North College Hill, Madeira, Cheviot, Mount Healthy and parts of the University of Cincinnati area could continue to experience high water.
Drivers should avoid flooded streets and never attempt to cross water-covered roadways. Visibility is also reduced in areas of fog this morning, adding another challenge for commuters along Interstates 71, 74, 75 and 275. Allow extra travel time and watch for ponding on entrance ramps and underpasses.
The flooding is only part of today’s weather story. Afternoon temperatures will climb to around 91 degrees, while heat index values could reach 102 degrees. According to the National Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., with damaging wind gusts posing the primary severe weather threat. A brief tornado cannot be completely ruled out in stronger storms, although damaging straight-line winds remain the greater concern.
Sunday brings quieter weather with sunshine and a high near 87 degrees, followed by another warm day Monday near 89 degrees. Another round of showers and thunderstorms is expected on Tuesday, July 21, with locally heavy rainfall possible before cooler, drier air gradually returns midweek.
The Climate Prediction Center’s 6-to-10-day outlook favors above-normal temperatures across the Ohio Valley, meaning midsummer warmth is expected to continue beyond next week.
