Louisville, Kentucky – Drivers across central and eastern Kentucky may encounter flooded roads within the next several hours as repeated rounds of showers and thunderstorms move over the same communities, raising the risk of rapid water rises and localized flash flooding through 8 p.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, a Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Monday evening for areas where storms repeatedly track over the same locations. Forecasters said localized rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are possible, especially in the corridor highlighted by the watch area, with earlier rainfall increasing the flood threat.

The greatest concern stretches across portions of central and eastern Kentucky, where saturated ground could allow creeks, drainage systems and low-water crossings to fill quickly. Communities from the Louisville region eastward toward Lexington and into parts of eastern Kentucky face an elevated risk for water-covered roads during heavier downpours.

The Weather Prediction Center continues to place much of the region under a slight risk for excessive rainfall. Additional rainfall totals of 0.25 to 0.50 inches are expected in many locations, while isolated areas could receive significantly higher amounts where storms repeatedly develop.

Residents should avoid driving through flooded roadways, monitor local alerts and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions during the evening commute. Additional warnings may be issued if flooding develops as storms continue across Kentucky through Monday night.
