Marquette, Mich. – Smoke drifts across the Lake Superior shoreline, softening the skyline while brisk north winds churn dangerous waves along Upper Peninsula beaches. The biggest concerns today aren’t just the hazy skies. Poor air quality and hazardous swimming conditions are developing together across the Marquette area.
An Air Quality Alert remains in effect across Upper Michigan as wildfire smoke from Canada continues spreading over the region. According to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), elevated fine particulate pollution will persist through today, with air quality ranging from Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups in southern areas to Very Unhealthy across portions of the north.
At the same time, the National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazards Statement for Marquette and Alger counties from 6 a.m. through 10 p.m. today. High wave action and dangerous rip currents are expected along Lake Superior, including beaches near Presque Isle, Middle Bay, Au Train, Grand Marais Harbor and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Officials urge everyone to stay out of the water, as strong currents can quickly overwhelm even experienced swimmers.
Patchy smoke continues through much of today with a high near 70 degrees. North winds of 15 to 20 mph, with gusts approaching 30 mph, will keep conditions breezy along the shoreline while reducing air quality. If you must spend time outdoors, limit strenuous activity, keep windows closed when possible, and consider using a properly fitted N95 respirator if smoke becomes dense.
Sunday brings a warmer high near 78 degrees, although areas of smoke may linger into the afternoon. A more active weather pattern develops Monday, bringing an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms as a cold front approaches. Additional scattered showers remain possible Tuesday before drier, cooler weather settles into the Upper Peninsula by midweek.
Across the Great Lakes, wildfire smoke is expected to gradually improve after early next week as changing winds accompany the incoming storm system. Longer-range outlooks continue to favor above-normal temperatures later next week.
