Detroit, Michigan – Temperatures are dropping fast across Southeast Michigan, with near-freezing conditions expected within hours Friday morning that could impact early commutes and damage sensitive plants. Lows are set to fall as low as 31°F by daybreak Friday, with similar conditions repeating through Sunday, raising concerns for frost on bridges and untreated roads, especially along I-94, I-75, and local surface streets.
According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, a stretch of well below average temperatures will persist through the weekend, combined with a 20–30% chance of light showers Thursday and Friday. The agency warns that frost and localized freeze conditions are likely each morning from Friday through Sunday, particularly in inland areas away from Lake Erie.
Cities including Detroit, Ann Arbor, Flint, and Pontiac will see morning lows ranging from 30°F to 40°F through Saturday, with daytime highs struggling in the upper 40s to low 50s. Rural and low-lying areas may dip to 30°F, increasing the risk of crop damage and icy patches on elevated roadways. Drivers should watch for slick spots on overpasses, especially before 8 a.m.
Residents are urged to cover plants, bring pets indoors overnight, and allow extra travel time during early morning hours. Charging devices and preparing for brief weather-related disruptions is also recommended.
Conditions begin to moderate Sunday afternoon, with highs climbing into the low 60s, but another round of showers and possible thunderstorms is expected by Monday. Additional advisories may be issued if temperatures trend lower.
