Charlotte, ME – Maine State Police are investigating a fatal crash in Washington County after a driver allegedly reached speeds approaching 150 mph before losing control and crashing early Saturday morning.
According to Maine State Police, troopers from the Northern Field Troop were notified of a fatal single-vehicle crash on Charlotte Road in Charlotte at approximately 12:48 a.m. Saturday, June 20.
Investigators identified the driver and sole occupant as 40-year-old Robert Boggia Jr. of Whiting. Authorities said Boggia was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the investigation revealed events leading up to the crash began earlier in the evening in Calais. Troopers allege Boggia had been at a local bar where he reportedly threatened people with a firearm before leaving prior to law enforcement’s arrival.
According to police, Boggia was later observed driving a red Corvette in Calais at an estimated 150 mph. The Baileyville Police Department attempted to locate and catch up with the vehicle but was unsuccessful.
A Washington County Sheriff’s deputy later observed the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Charlotte Road. Authorities said the deputy was unable to catch up before coming upon the crash scene.
Investigators determined Boggia was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and was found a significant distance from the wreckage.
Maine State Police said excessive speed appears to be the largest contributing factor in the fatal collision. The investigation into the circumstances leading up to the crash remains ongoing, and toxicology testing is pending.
Charlotte Road was closed for several hours while troopers documented evidence and processed the scene.
Authorities have not released additional details as the investigation continues.
