Terre Haute, IN – Drivers traveling through Vigo County should prepare for delays as lane restrictions begin on a section of U.S. 41 south of Terre Haute.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), contractors began implementing alternating lane closures on U.S. 41 on or after Sunday, June 22, as part of a bridge project over the Indiana Railroad.

The work zone is located in Vigo County near Terre Haute and will require one lane of traffic to be closed at a time while construction crews perform improvements on the bridge structure.

Motorists traveling through the area can expect changing traffic patterns, reduced speeds, and potential delays during active work periods. INDOT advises drivers to slow down, remain alert, and use caution when traveling through construction zones.

The agency said the alternating lane closures are expected to remain in place through July, although the schedule is weather dependent and could change based on construction progress or weather conditions.

U.S. 41 serves as a major north-south route through western Indiana and is heavily traveled by both local commuters and commercial traffic. Even temporary lane restrictions can create backups during peak travel times.

No full road closure or detour has been announced at this time, but drivers should allow extra travel time when passing through the work zone.

INDOT encourages motorists to stay informed of changing road conditions and construction updates before traveling.

The bridge improvement project is part of ongoing efforts to maintain and improve transportation infrastructure across the region.
