Orland Park, IL – Families gathered Monday as the Village of Orland Park celebrated the opening of a new inclusive playground at Schussler Park, a project designed to create a more accessible recreation space for children of all abilities.

According to the Village of Orland Park, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Monday, June 22, at Schussler Park, located at 14609 Poplar Road. The event included remarks from village officials, recognition of project contributors, and the official opening of the new play area.

Special guest Kendall Coyne Schofield, a Sandburg High School alumna, two-time Olympic gold medalist, and two-time Walter Cup champion, participated in the celebration.

Construction on Schussler Park Phase II began in February 2026 and included a new inclusive playground, a half basketball court, and a picnic pavilion. Village leaders said the improvements are intended to make the park more welcoming and accessible for residents and visitors.

Mayor Jim Dodge said the project reflects the village’s commitment to creating public spaces where everyone feels welcome.

The project received financial support through a $600,000 Illinois Department of Natural Resources Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant. Village officials said the funding helped offset construction costs and allowed additional accessibility features to be incorporated into the design.

According to the village, the playground was designed from the outset to exceed Americans with Disabilities Act requirements. Features include integrated play equipment, sensory-rich elements, quiet spaces, and accessible ramped pathways intended to support children with a wide range of physical, sensory, cognitive, social, and emotional needs.

Village officials encourage residents of all ages to visit the new facility and enjoy the upgraded park amenities throughout the summer.
